FAST FACTS ABOUT NEVADO DEL RUIZ

This majestic active stratovolcano is one of the most iconic and heavily visited peaks in the Central Cordillera of the Colombian Andes, towering at an altitude of approximately 5,330 meters (17,486 feet) above sea level. It holds an immense ecological wealth, acting as a sanctuary for endangered high-altitude flora and fauna, including the majestic Andean Condor 🦅.

Due to its vast history, the mountain has received many names across centuries. The Spanish conquerors named it Mesa de Herveo. However, in pre-Columbian times, the indigenous natives profoundly referred to it as Tama (meaning "Grandfather or Great Father") and Cumanday (meaning "White Hill" or "The Beautiful Mountain").

Beyond its undeniable beauty, the volcano is globally known for the historic cataclysm that occurred on November 13, 1985. A moderate eruption triggered a massive lahar (mudslide and debris flow) that completely swept away the urban center of Armero, resulting in over 23,000 casualties. This event is recorded as the second most fatal volcanic disaster of the 20th century.

Crucial Status Notice: Currently, the Nevado del Ruiz volcano is under an official active Yellow Alert (Alerta Amarilla) status due to continuous seismic and ash activity.

HOW TO GET TO NEVADO DEL RUIZ 🚙

To visit Nevado del Ruiz, the mandatory first step is to arrive in the city of Manizales. This is where our professional tour operator picked us up in a 4x4 mountain vehicle to begin the high-altitude ascent.

Please note that there is absolutely no public transportation running from cities to the high-altitude gates of Nevado del Ruiz.

With every single kilometer we drove, urban concrete buildings faded away, and we became entirely submerged within the mist-covered cloud forests of Los Nevados National Natural Park. Soon, we reached the vast alpine ecosystems filled with giant frailejones 🍃. To properly acclimatize our lungs to the rapid pressure changes, our driver advised us to crack open the vehicle windows, allowing the freezing mountain air to sync with our bodies.

-> THE BLACK LAGOON (LAGUNA NEGRA)

Along the road, we took advantage of several scenic viewpoints to photograph the changing ecosystems. Our first major stop was Laguna Negra. This is a majestic, crystal-clear lake of pure glacial origin resting right outside the main volcanic massif. It serves as a vital sanctuary and resting ground for numerous migratory birds and wild ducks.

-> THE NEVADO DEL RUIZ PANORAMIC VIEW

After photographing the glacial lake, we continued pushing up the mountain road to a remote sector known as "El Arbolito". On a clear day, this specific ridge offers a colossal, jaw-dropping panoramic view of the massive ice cap and smoke plume of Nevado del Ruiz.

Shortly past this point, you arrive at the official control gate of the National Park. Keep in mind that ticket counters have strict morning operational cutoffs. Additionally, right after paying your admission, you must attend a mandatory 30-minute high-altitude safety briefing led by certified park rangers.

PARK PERMITS & ADMISSION FEES (2026)

Please be aware that camping is strictly prohibited inside this protected area, and pets are completely banned. To gain legal entry into Los Nevados National Park, we had to cover the following operational fees:

  • Los Nevados National Park Entry Permit 2026 🎟️: For visitors aged 5 to 25, the fee is $18,000 COP. For Colombian residents aged 25 to 70, the cost is $32,000 COP. For international travelers (foreigners), the mandatory entrance fee is $68,000 COP.
  • Mandatory Rescue & Medical Assistance Insurance ⛑️: This specialized daily mountain insurance is a non-negotiable legal requirement enforced across all Colombian National Parks.
  • Certified Mountain Guide 🧔: Entering the Nevado del Ruiz sector independently is strictly illegal. You can only enter accompanied by a certified tour guide, and the entire high-altitude circuit must be performed inside an authorized vehicle.

Important Evacuation Regulation: Because Nevado del Ruiz is under active Yellow Alert, park authorities strictly mandate that the entire high-altitude tourist circuit must be executed using 4x4 vehicles. This ensures that in the event of a sudden ash eruption or hazard, rangers can execute a high-speed emergency group evacuation.

THE OVERLAND HIGH-ALTITUDE VEHICULAR TRAIL 🚗

The high-altitude circuit takes approximately 3 hours to complete. As emphasized, the journey is performed entirely by vehicle due to the volcano's active Yellow Alert safety restrictions. We were permitted to disembark, step onto the terrain, and walk short distances at the following specific, authorized stations:

Below is our verified GPS route map detailing the exact stations we crossed inside Nevado del Ruiz. Remember, you will ride between these points and only perform short, low-impact walks at the designated locations to avoid breathing heavy volcanic gases.

-> AGUACERALES SECTOR

This unique canyon wall gets its name because freezing water constantly drips down the rock faces, feeding an incredibly rare, hyper-dense alpine paramo vegetation that hangs vertically along the mountainside.

-> ARENALES SECTOR (THE VOLCANIC ASH DESERT)

This open sector features a wide natural terrace where you can step out to admire the absolute vastness of the Andean canyon system. There is a small rustic refuge and high-altitude cafeteria ☕️ where you can drink hot local coffee to warm up.

-> VALLE DE LAS TUMBAS SECTOR (THE MAXIMUM ACCESSIBLE POINT)

Also heavily known as The Desert of Solitude. Pre-Columbian history shows this eerie, rock-strewn plateau was a deeply sacred pilgrimage site for indigenous communities who climbed from low valleys to perform mystical offerings. Standing at this high-altitude desert, we observed one of the massive volcanic ravines down which the tragic 1985 lahar descended toward Armero.

This desolate plateau represents the absolute maximum boundary permitted for tourists. Due to the active Yellow Alert status, hiking further up toward the ice cap or the main crater is strictly prohibited for safety reasons.

💡 FINAL SAFETY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR YOUR NEVADO DEL RUIZ EXPEDITION

To ensure your high-altitude adventure is a total success and free of logistics issues, keep these expert tips in mind:

  • ⚠️ Road Restrictions (Pico y Placa): Local environmental and transit authorities enforce strict license plate restrictions (Pico y Placa) on the mountain access highway, especially during weekends and national holidays (alternating between even and odd days). Verify your transport plate ahead of time to avoid heavy fines.
  • 🚗 Understand the Circuit Dynamics: Due to the active Yellow Alert, Nevado del Ruiz is not an open trekking trail where you can hike onto the snow. The circuit is primarily vehicular, stopping at designated geological viewpoints where you can disembark for short, controlled walks.
  • 🧥 Gear & Layering System: Even though you ride inside a vehicle, stepping out at 4,400 meters (14,435 feet) exposes your body to fierce alpine winds and sub-zero wind chills. You must pack a proper technical layering system: a windproof hardshell jacket, an insulated thermal fleece, warm gloves, and a beanie. If you are missing high-performance gear, order directly from our technical store: Randes.co.
  • 🕒 High-Season Peak Delays: During holidays and clear summer weekends, bottleneck lines at the park gate can cause waiting delays of up to 4 hours. Never show up without a confirmed agency slot; if daily visitor capacity is reached, park rangers will deny your entry.
